English and Welsh wine - some key statistics
- English and Welsh wine sales have increased by nearly 70% in the past two years
- Average of 1.6m vines planted each year
- Year on year sales increase of 31% in 2021
- Between 2019 and 2021 sales increased by 69%
- Direct to consumer seen biggest growth up by 265% in past two years
- This now accounts for 57% of all sales, up from 36% in 2019
- There are now 3,758 hectares under vine in England and Wales
- There are 879 vineyards and 197 wineries (195 in England, 2 in Wales)
- They employ over 10,000 workers
- Hectareage has grown by 70% in five years, quadrupling since 2000
- The most widely planted variety is Chardonnay, with 1,179 ha.
- This is followed by Pinot Noir (1,164ha) and Pinot Meunier (327ha).
- The bulk of production (68%) is sparkling, of which 81% is white and 19% rose
- Of still wine, 68% is white, 17% rose and 14% red.
- The Sustainable Wines of Great Britain scheme has 83 members covering 77 of the country’s vineyards.
- There are now 35 fully accredited wines released bearing the SWGB tag.
